Bilingualism Matters opened at Wilfrid Laurier in Waterloo, Canada, on 11th October 2019. The branch is hosted by the Language Acquisition, Multilingualism, and Cognition Laboratory at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Branch aims
Our objective is to generate high-quality research and mobilize knowledge to the academic and non-academic communities. Through ongoing research and public outreach activities, we aim to:
- raise the awareness and profile of bilingualism and language learning in our local community and larger society
- empower bilingual families, children, and adults
- influence the work and attitudes of professionals regarding bilingualism

Branch Director; Professor, Spanish and Linguistics
Dr. John W. Schwieter is Professor of Spanish and Linguistics at Wilfrid Laurier University. His research interests include bilingualism, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and translation and cognition. He is also the Director of the Language Acquisition, Multilingualism, and Cognition Laboratory and Bilingualism Matters @ Laurier.

Dr. Aline Ferreira
Assistant Professor of Spanish and Linguistics and Director of the Bilingualism, Translation, and Cognition Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Barbara
Dr. Aline Ferreira is Assistant Professor of Spanish and Linguistics and Director of the Bilingualism, Translation, and Cognition Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she collects and analyzes reading and translation process data and measures different aspects of cognition. Prior to UCSB, she was a post-doctoral research fellow in psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Dr. Alexandra Gottardo
Professor of Psychology and Director of the Language and Literacy Research Laboratory
Dr. Alexandra Gottardo is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Language and Literacy Research Laboratory at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her work examines reading in individuals who speak English as a second or additional language. She has won numerous externally-funded grants and was awarded Wilfrid Laurier University Research Professor in 2017.
